With a simple three minute speech and several rounds of voting, at the end of the night on 12/21/2021 I was appointed as a Jackson County Commissioner representing District 7. The next morning at the courthouse, I was able to take an oath of office for the second time.
Not so much at the time yet growing since, I keep returning to the word “faithfully” in the oath it even appears in my first oath taken for my City Office on 12/1/2017 – actually, side by side, they are nearly identical, though I do much prefer the City oath.
It makes two clear distinctions.
Firstly, for the County the words are that “I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of County Commission according to the best of my ability.” Yet for the City it is extended. “that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of 3rd Ward in and for the City of Jackson County of Jackson and the State of Michigan, according to the best of my ability..”
Secondly and most importantly, the City allows help.
As the sentence I quoted partially above actually ends with “so help me God.”
